Jay Sekulow, Chief Counsel for the American Center for Law Justice (ACLJ), is lending his “talent” to the ongoing efforts of the Trump election campaign to stop the counting of legally cast votes in States such as Michigan, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Nevada. Along with former NY mayor Rudy Guiliani, these attorneys have been summoned by Donald J. Trump Inc. to go to the heavily contested battleground states in order to steal the election by disrupting the election counting process that is the staple of American democracy. Without this process in place, we will witness the end of the most base and fundamental rights that we have in America.

I remember listening to Sekulow’s radio program on our local Christian radio station. Back then, I believed that Mr. Sekulow was standing for the rights of the conservative population. I supported his efforts to “thwart” the persecution and onslaught of the “left” and “libs” who would attempt at every turn to defile this nation. That was many, many years ago. Times have changed. I have evolved. Mr. Sekulow has not — determining to remain faithful to a specific sect of religion that only cares about its own rights and not the rights of the entire communities within the United States. This is tribalism at its worst.

For a lawyer, and one with such a high profile in the United States, to support and assist President Trump in stopping legally cast votes from being counted on nothing more than Trump’s suspicion, paranoia, and fear, is disgusting.

His relevancy as an attorney is called into question. How he could not assess this situation and make the decision to stand down and not pursue Trump’s electoral grab is beyond me. He seems to be studying the trees instead of looking at the forest that is the American democracy. He is trying to help Trump steal the election outright by stopping the vote counting while Trump is ahead in a few States. He is attempting to disable the democracy, disable the legal rights of Americans, and disable the traditions that make America actually great. The voters will have the final say in this election, and hopefully, those votes will “make America great again.”

Mr. Sekulow is giving yet another black eye to the relevancy of Christianity in the United States. Or maybe it is simply the apocalypse, the unveiling or revealing, of the true heart of Western, evangelical, fundamental Christianity in America. This is what the American Christian church (not in whole, but in part) has become. Simply a tool of authoritarianism on behalf of conspiracy theorists and half truths.

What makes the church relevant? Calling out injustices, standing for those who are vulnerable, and ministering with integrity and honesty. I fully expect some high-profile pastors to come out in support of Trump’s electoral theft by saying that “the left is politicizing the election.” The church is full of elitism, racism, misogyny, and sexism, among other things. Irrelevant for the most part. Don’t get me wrong… there are congregations and churches and ministers out there who are doing the work of Christ and actually helping those less fortunate and in need. To focus on caring for others, to be interdependent upon others, to find our “self” in the other self, is what will keep the church relevant.

ACLJ’s website states (at the bottom of the page in print nearly matching the background making it hard to read and visualize) that “The ACLJ is an organization dedicated to the defense of constitutional liberties secured by law.” Yeah, I don’t think so.
